At the heart of Strathroy-Caradoc, we’re building something special—a community where everyone feels they belong. Through the Welcoming Community initiative, we’re recognizing local businesses, organizations, and public spaces that go above and beyond to foster belonging, inclusion, and accessibility for all.
Our Story
This initiative began in 2016, rooted in a new approach that prioritized community involvement and participation over traditional service models like sheltered workshops. Guided by our strategic theme, "Promoting & Advancing Life in Community," we shifted focus from a life in service to a life fully lived in the community. By 2018, a single idea captured the imagination of Middlesex Community Living—an idea that quickly grew into a vibrant, community-wide movement. Its goal: to expand opportunities and promote inclusion for all members of our community. The concept was simple: recognize local spaces that commit to inclusion by awarding them a Decal of Distinction—a public symbol of their pledge to make Strathroy-Caradoc a place where everyone belongs. Shortly after the idea took off, Middlesex Community Living received a modernization grant from the Ontario government, providing the resources needed to bring the initiative to life. Since launching the program and developing the accompanying toolkit, 62 local businesses and organizations proudly display their Decal of Distinction—and the number continues to grow.
What We Celebrate
To be recognized with a Decal of Distinction, your space must demonstrate at least one indicator in each of these five criteria:
- Accessible
- Compassionate
- Friendly
- Helpful
- Safe

How It Works
Getting involved is easy:
